The “Last Mile” Revolution

wimaxOn July 19th, telecom giant Sprint-Nextel and wireless web innovator Clearwire signed a letter of intent to join forces and blanket a substantial percentage of the U.S. with a high-speed wireless broadband network.

These tech giants intend to bring most of America’s major metro and suburban areas high-speed web access before the end of this year reaching full capacity by New Year’s Eve 2008… whole cities including parks, stadiums, bars and waterfronts will now be covered by fast, powerful wireless, microwave Internet access.

Imagine living anywhere in the mountains or back woods of the great American interior back in the early-1800’s, before the railroad. Horses would have been the only means of transportation. Now, imagine the day when the first locomotive arrives at your town’s new train station.

Lifestyles Of The Poor And Anonymous

goldman-sachsWe’ve all heard the top names in Investment Banking tossed around lately… trusted names like Bear Stearns, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers. Even Bank of America, CitiCorp and Wachovia, to name a few, have gotten in on the act. For years they have been raking in boatloads of cash from this sub-prime shell game they’ve been running.

Well, here’s an eye opener. Goldman Sachs, the oldest and largest of the investment banking firms on Wall Street is the only firm involved in the mortgage meltdown that’s still making money… lots of it.

Bad Moon Rising

fed-reserveAnybody feel sorry for the poor investment bankers out there? They certainly have been up against it lately. Fearing for their jobs they still refuse to come clean as to how much sub-prime bonds they’re holding on their books.

They were almost giddy with the boatloads of money and bonuses they had racked up over the past 5 years. After all, coming up with the idea of packaging these nasty little investment vehicles which they sold to unsuspecting Wall Street Investors and Pension Funds was a stroke of genius.

The Boom & the Bust

yin-yangEverything in our lives operates according to the natural cycle of life. Some call it Yin & Yang but to everything there is a season (turn, turn, turn). Babies are born, they grow up, they mature, they grow old and then they die. All things in life must follow these simple rules of nature, there are no exceptions.

Our economy follows these same natural laws. There are the “Boom” times where we experience growth and expansion (the good times). Businesses are expanding making capital investments, increasing advertising budgets, wages are rising, people are buying cars, taking vacations. “God is in His Heaven and all is right with the world.” This is inevitably followed by the “Bust Cycle.” As I have said previously, trees don’t grow to the sky and the good times don’t last forever. After a period of strong and sustained growth nature resets the scales as a way of balancing things. Alas, into each life a little rain must fall.
